Through our travels, we’ve noticed so many different signs that have given us pause – sometimes to think and ponder and sometime to burst out in laughter. This post, and subsequent additions, will share some of our favorites. Scroll down to #25 for newest signs!
- Don’t Bathe / Wash feet in toilet. Nothing really to add here. (Thailand)

2. Sit / no sit – Adds a little clarification just in case. (Thailand)

3. Saw this sign at the awesome Grand Canyon water playground outside of Chiang Mai, Thailand. The question remains. Are you dare to jump? (Thailand)

4. Hokitika sticks. Perhaps this is more art than signage. It’s made up of sticks found on the shore. (New Zealand)

5. I met these Chinese girls in Bagan, Myanmar. They had a lot of energy and effervescence and were happy to pose. (Myanmar)

6. Croc warning at river. Don’t swim here. Those lurking underwater are the real deal. (Australia)

7. Australian cassowary. Sure enough, we saw a papa cassowary and chick shortly after passing this sign. (Australia)

8. Had a great visit to Bondi Beach in Sydney. (Australia)

9. Greta’s graffiti in Melbourne. (Australia)

10. To Pyongyang. Pretty cool to imagine this station opening someday. (DMZ)

11. Go Vikes! (Minnesota)

Latest addition:
Here is my second input to the ‘unique signs and plaques’ posting which displays unique, funny, and serious representations from around the world. Please forgive the poor quality of the images as these are from me, not G.
12. This is the train station stop in Wales. We heard the name of this town pronounced correctly, but I can’t say it. Not sure how it would fit on a baseball or basketball jersey.

13. Cape Town / Cairo – this plaque is found at the elegant Victoria Falls Hotel and has great meaning for me. This is where Cindy and I stood in 1998 when dreaming about taking future kids back here.

14. Abbey Road – also something important for me. Living history as the Beatles recorded right across the street. Some consider “Abbey Road” the best album of all time.

15. Baboons. Although we didn’t see any baboons in this South African park, we were duly warned of their aggressive nature.

16. Camel – seen in Oman. And yes, there are camels all around the desert countryside.

17. No durians / no jackfruit – We frequently saw different versions of this type of sign that forbids the foul smelling and sticky fruits in public places, trains, elevators, etc. Hit my funny bone for some reason. I had never heard of a durian prior to the trip.

18. Dusty Springfield – RIP beautiful songbird. Thank you for sharing your gifts.

19. 2 gold plaques – not all the signs and plaques we found were funny or amusing. Throughout several countries in Europe, we saw gold plaques on streets and boulevards commemorating those who lost their lives to the holocaust.

20. Men aren’t allowed inside – as seen at a salon in Oman. … not that I wanted to go inside a women’s salon.

21. Sale – tickets ladies / gents – as we understand it, separate ticket lines at the month-long Muscat (Oman) Festival are in place to prohibit the practice of men standing in line behind women.

22. Welcome to Tet Kuang Si as seen at the bear rescue center and waterfalls outside of Luang Prabang, Laos. People trying to make a difference.

23. Botswana 50 – The Botswana 50 sign was put in place in 2016 to celebrate Botswana’s 50th anniversary of independence from Britain.

24. Horse meat anyone? I was surprised to find a sign for a horse meat butcher in Munich, but there it is.

25. When in Honolulu– can’t miss out on Hawaiian style Hot Dogs at Hula Dog.
26. The Australia Zoo made famous by Steve Irwin. This was a must see for our family.

27. Standing in front of sign that welcomes all to one of the official Muay-Thai boxing arenas in Bangkok. Lumping Muay Thai Boxing. Our visit here was more than I expected – The music, crowd, gambling, fighters and the relationship between them all. A great experience.

28. “Cape Point- Not the tip of Africa, but close.”

29. We visited Somphet Market to pick up provisions for our cooking class in Chiangmai. Great experience.

30. Zimbabwe and Zambia border.

31. Road signs in Ireland are written in native Irish first. We experienced that all the Gaelic languages are surging in popularity and are making a comeback.
